Active in stage, television and film, Bill Pullman is an experienced American actor who has been in the industry since the mid-80s. Who is Bill Pullman?
The American actor was born William James Pullman on December 17, 1953, in Hornell, New York. He is one of the 7 children of James Pullman and Johanna (née Blaas). Both of her parents work in the medical field, her father being a doctor and her mother a nurse. Pullman wanted to become a construction engineer, but in college he fell in love with acting. He taught drama for a while before branching out into stage work with the encouragement of his students.
Pullman starred in several New York City theater productions before making her screen debut in the 1986 film Ruthless People. In his films and television shows, Pullman stays true to his theatrical roots. He received critical acclaim for his role in Edward Albee’s Broadway play The Goat or Who is Sylvia? which lasted one year from 2001 to 2002.
Bill Pulman is also a creative writer and has written plays as much as he has acted in theaters. He owns a production company called Big Town. Pullman has had a dulled sense of smell since he was 21, when he fell into a coma after falling from a ladder in middle school. The actor stands at a height of 6 feet 1 inch.
Education
Bill Pullman’s education began in his native Hornell New York where he attended Hornell High School, graduating in 1971. Almost immediately, he enrolled at the State University of New York in Delhi – a technology-focused school where he hoped to earn a degree in construction engineering.
However, after falling in love with the performing arts, Pullman transferred to the State University of New York at Oneonta, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 1975. Pullman has a Masters in Directing scene from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
With hopes of studying to the pulpit level, BillPullman began teaching acting at Montana State University’s School of Film and Photography. He would later receive an honorary doctorate from Alfred University in Western New York (where he is a board member) on May 14, 2011.
