Terry Bowden is an American college football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the University of Akron Zips football team. He was born on February 25, 1956 in Douglas, Georgia. Bowden attended the University of West Virginia, where he played quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1974 to 1976. He graduated with a degree in physical education in 1977. Bowden began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at West Virginia in 1977. He then served as an assistant coach at Salem College, East Carolina University, and Duke University. In 1984, he was hired as the head coach at Salem College, where he compiled a record of 35-11-1 in five seasons. In 1990, Bowden was hired as the head coach at Auburn University. He led the Tigers to an undefeated season in 1993 and was named the National Coach of the Year. He was fired in 1998 after a 5-6 season. Bowden then served as the head coach at North Alabama from 1999 to 2001. He then served as an assistant coach at Clemson University from 2003 to 2006. In 2007, Bowden was hired as the head coach at the University of Akron. He has led the Zips to a bowl game in each of the last three seasons.
