Born Layne Rutherford Staley on August 22, 1967 to Phillip Blair “Phil” Staley and Nancy Elizabeth Staley in Kirkland, Washington, Layne was a child who despised his middle name and hated anyone who called him Rutherford. In fact, as he grew, he took the name Thomas as a teenager. Unfortunately for the singer, his parents divorced when he was 7 years old and he was raised by his mother and stepfather Jim Elmer.
Despite this, Layne Staley was raised as a Christian scientist, criticizing Christianity and calling most of its beliefs hypocritical and unimaginable. His parents’ habit of listening to various music records and singing is said to have influenced his career choices, and by the age of 2, Layne was mumbling and singing along with BJ Thomas in his song Raindrops Falling on My Head anytime the song was played. Records also state that the track was his favorite song.
He later joined a rhythm band in Bellevue when he was three and was also noted as the youngest person in the band. At the age of nine he wrote an essay about how he wanted to be a singer. In terms of his education, Layne was a student at Meadowdale High School. Sources say he was known as Layne Elmer for a while as a high school student.
By the time Layne was twelve, he had already mastered the craft and twists of music and was already a guru when it came to playing the drums. With his excellent drumming skills, other bands invited him to play with them and in 1984 he became a member of the band Sleze, currently known as Alice in Chains.
Joining the band Alice and Chains became one of the platforms where Layne gained popularity. He released several albums with the band, including Facelift (1990), Dirt (1992) and the eponymous Alice in Chains (1995). Aside from his influence in the band, Layne was one of the frontrunners in creating the group’s many successes, and indeed some refer to him as one of the group’s masterminds while he was alive.
